2012 was a big year. The hotline received more sea turtle reports from boaters than in any previous year, including 79 reports of leatherbacks and 55 reports of loggerheads. Although these sightings did not represent an actual count, we believe they did indicate a larger number of sea turtles occurring in local waters. This, in turn, helped staff and volunteers at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and New England Aquarium prepare for what turned out to be a record number of cold-stunned sea turtles washing ashore on Cape Cod beaches in the late fall and winter.
As we all look forward to the 2013 boating season, remember that we share the ocean with many species, including endangered sea turtles. Watch out for them, and please report sightings. Happy Boating!
